Momordica Charantia or Bitter Melon , is a herb that may regulate blood sugar levels. Bitter Melon is Rich in iron; bitter melon has twice the beta carotene of broccoli, twice the calcium of spinach, twice the potassium of bananas, and contains vitamins C and B 1 to 3, phosphorus and good dietary fiber. It is believed to be good for the liver and has been proven by western scientists to contain insulin, act as an anti-tumor agent, and inhibit HIV-1 infection.

Melia Azadirachta also known as neem is one of the most famous plants found throughout India. It has strong health maintaining properties. Neem’s traditional use is based on its detoxifying benefits that help maintain healthy circulatory, digestive, respiratory and urinary functions. It also has immune enhancement properties and act as a booster of the macrophage’s effectiveness

All the parts of the plant and active principles and extracts possess a lot of significance and pharmacological properties. It is bitter and alterative. It is used as a poultice in boils, is antiseptic, demulcent, a tonic in catarrhal affections, stomachic, stimulant. It is useful in snake bite, scorpion sting, hypoglycemic, in rheumatism, as an analgesic, antipyretic, sedative, antibacterial, antiprotozoal, antiviral, anthelmintic and in skin diseases.

The antibacterial, antifungal and blood purifying properties of Nimba are useful in skin disorders and keep the skin healthy.

Pterocarpus Marsupium, derived from the Indian kino tree, has been used to treat inflammation and diabetes. The heart wood is astringent, bitter acrid, anti inflammatory, anthelmintic, anodyne. It is considered as magical for Diabities. It turns the water blue as soon as it comes in contact with the water. It is good for elephantiasis, leucoderma, diarrhoea, dysentary, rectalgia, cough and greyness of hair.                                                                        

Tinospora Cordifolia, also known as Guduchi, has been used to treat chronic rheumatism and malarial fevers. It may also relieve excess perspiration, burning sensations, and headaches. Guduchi is a large shrub commonly found in Himalayas and in tropical India and useful in treating all three doshas (Vata, pitta and kapha) of the body. It is a good rejuvenator, alleviates problems pertaining to indigestion and strengthens the body system.

Guduchi is also useful in treating Fever, Jaundice, Asthma, Gout, Cough, Helminthic infestations etc. Ayurvedic practitioners suggest this herb as a tonic that boosts immunity power of the body and helps in liver regeneration against induced hepatotoxicity. The other prime diseases against which it is used include, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Malaria and other fevers, urinary problem, diabetes, early syphilis, skin diseases, nausea, excessive thirst, acidity, vomiting, heavy bleeding during abortion, delivery or menstruation, constipation, tuberculosis, leprosy, diarrhea, indigestion and liver disorders. Gymnema Sylvestre is an herb with a hypoglycemic function and is thought to aid in the maintenance of healthy glucose levels. Gymnema sylvestre has been successful in controlling the blood sugar level without reducing it to below the normal blood sugar levels, an effect sometimes seen with the use of insulin or oral hypoglycemic sulphonylurea compounds. Due to its non-toxic nature and sweetness-suppression activity, Gymnema sylvestre can play a role in treating conditions caused by excessive sugar intakes. Conditions like obesity, hyperglycemia, anemia and osteoporosis can also be helped by using it.                                    

Gymnema Sylvestre is regarded as one of the plants with potent anti diabetic properties. This plant is also used for controlling obesity in the form of Gymnema tea. The active compound of the plant is a group of acids termed as gymnemic acids. It has been observed that there could be a possible link between obesity, Gymnemic acids and diabetes. This review will try to put forth an overall idea about the plant as well as present a molecular perspective linking the common medicine to the most common metabolic disorders.

Enicostemma Littorale is an extract thought to have anti-diabetic properties, in addition to functioning as a laxative and an anti-inflammatory. The leaves of Enicostemma littorale blume (ENS) and Eclipta Alba (ECL) have been used for skin infection, antiviral and antibacterial activity in traditional medicine.

 Emblica Officinalis, or Indian Gooseberry, is a tree, various parts of which are used in Ayurvedic herbal preparations as tonics for longevity and strengthening lungs. The tree’s fruit is an adaptogen. Amla’s traditional uses include as a laxative, eye wash, appetite stimulant, restorative tonic, and to treat anorexia, indigestion, diarrhea, anemia, and jaundice.

Amla is becoming increasingly well known for its unusually high levels of Vitamin C, which is resistant to storage and heat damage due to cooking. Indian Gooseberry or Amla is used for all Pitta diseases, all obstinate urinary conditions, anemia, biliousness, bleeding, colitis, constipation, convalescence from fever, cough, diabetes, gastritis, gout, hepatitis, hemorrhoids, liver weakness, to relieve stress ,osteoporosis, palpitation, spleen weakness, tissue deficiency, vertigo rebuilds blood, bones, cells, and tissues.

It increases red blood cell count and regulates blood sugar; heart tonic, cleanses mouth, stops gum bleeding, stops stomach and colon inflammation; cleanses intestines, strengthens teeth, aids eyesight, worms, acidity, eye and lung inflammations, ulcerations, painful urination, and internal bleeding. The edible fruit tissue contains protein concentration 3-fold and ascorbic acid concentration 160-fold compared to that of the apple.

The fruit also contains considerably higher concentration of most minerals and amino acids than apples.

Eugenia Jambolana is an evergreen tropical tree, the seeds of which may possess a moderate hypoglycemic effect. The seeds may reduce levels of blood glucose, blood urea, and cholesterol. Jambul has long been used as a stomachic astringent and carminative in diarrhea, and also in the treatment of diabetes.

                                                                   

Cassia Auriculata is an herb that may help to control blood sugars. Cassia auriculata, commonly known as “Tanner’s cassia,” is widely used in Indian folk medicine for the treatment of diabetes mellitus. This plant is said to contain a cardiac glycoside and sap, leaves and bark yield anthraquinone anthraquinones, while the latter contains tannins. The root is used in decoctions against fevers, diabetes, diseases of urinary system and constipation.

The leaves have laxative properties. The dried flowers and flower buds are used as a substitute for tea in case of diabetes patents. It is also believed to improve the complexion in women. The powdered seed is also applied to the eye, in case of chronic purulent conjunctivitis. In Africa the bark and seeds are said to give relief in rheumatism, eye diseases, gonorrhea, diabetes and gout.

Curcuma Longa, or Turmeric, is a plant in the ginger family. Aside from its use as a spice in foods, Curcuma Longa may function as an antiseptic. Curcuma Longa is a source in treating pancreatic cancer, multiple myeloma, Anzheimer’s, colorectal cancer, breast cancer, cystic fibrosis, melanoma, psoriasis, and joint inflammation. Dried Curcuma longa is the source of the spice turmeric, the ingredient that gives curry powder its characteristic yellow color. 

Turmeric is used extensively in foods for both its flavor and color. Turmeric has a long tradition of use in the Chinese and Ayurvedic systems of medicine, particularly as an anti-inflammatory agent, and for the treatment of flatulence, jaundice, menstrual difficulties, hematuria, hemorrhage, and colic.

Turmeric can also be applied topically in poultices to relieve pain and inflammation. Current research has focused on turmeric’s antioxidant, hepatoprotective, anti-inflammatory, anticarcinogenic, and antimicrobial properties, in addition to its use in cardiovascular disease and gastrointestinal disorders.
