Asparagus racemosus is a much-branched, spinous under-shrub, with tuberous, short rootstock, bearing numerous fusiform, succulent, tuberous roots. The plant contains four saponins, viz. Shatavari I to IV.
The roots, leaves, and their different extracts possess many pharmacological properties. They are refrigerant, demulcent, aphrodisiac, antiseptic, alterative, antidysenteric, diuretic, antidiarrheal, galactagogue, antiamebic, hypoglycemic, anticancer, gastric sedative, phagocytic, cardiotonic, hypotensive, anticoagulant, enzymatic, antioxytocic to uterine contraction and antiviral.
ACTION
A herb that regulates hormonal secretion. Shatavari acts as a galactagogue and is useful in lactation failure. It promotes lactation.
